Impact of Dancing on Obesity Indices on Bengalee Female Adolescents of Kolkata
Original Research
Growth spurts generally occurs at adolescents when favourable conditions operate throughout the entire period of growth. This growth, especially in terms of body height, is a mark of a country’s socio- economic improvement as well as a child’s general condition or health. But along with this growth, the change in the lifestyle is resulting in excess body weight or obesity a serious public health challenge of the 21st century. On the other hand, movement, a basic form of communication, through dance, helps in recreation and to express. In this backdrop, a study has been undertaken to observe the influence of dancing on growth in terms of body height and obesity indices like WHR, WHtR, BAI, BMAI, HAI, CI and CFR in Bengalee female adolescents of Kolkata. 33 adolescent female individuals, receiving dance training for a minimum period of 5 years and practicing regularly for at least an hour for 6 days in a week constituted the dancing group (DG). The control group (CG) had 37 female individuals of comparable age and socio-economic background, but not receiving training in any form of dance or exercise. It was found that the adolescent female individuals practicing dance regularly have significantly (P < 0.05) higher growth but significantly (P < 0.05) lower obesity indices compared to their age matched counterparts. It may be concluded that dance is a cost effective beneficial way of exercising; it can serve as potential tool for growth and optimum body composition in Bengalee female adolescents of Kolkata.

Impact of Pubertal Growth on Physical Fitness
Original Research
Puberty is a combination of physical, physiological and psychological changes with detectable alterations in physical growth, which is a determining factor for assessment of physical fitness. Several studies have documented the functionality of physical activity for pubertal growth. But the present review has aimed to investigate whether normal pubertal growth, along with its endocrinological variations affect the level of physical fitness and what are the major fitness variables mostly regulated by the hormonal changes during puberty. Different sex hormones in boys and girls have been found to play the key role for regulation of various fitness determinants like body composition, muscle strength, bone development, erythropoiesis, cardiac function, substrate utilization etc. The major fitness components- strength, aerobic and anaerobic fitness, all have been found to be largely associated and influenced by the growth related endocrinological alterations during puberty.

Heart Rate and Blood Pressure Trait of Bangladeshi Children Age Ranged from 1 to 12 Years
Original Research
Blood pressure of Bangladeshi children aged between 1 to 12 from both sexes were measured in Bangladesh. Three hundred and seventy one children were measured randomly for their heart rate and blood pressure, out of which 243 were boys and 128 were girls. In the present study height and weight were increased gradually as age increases. Both systolic and diastolic pressure elevated gradually as age advanced though the change was not highly significant. Similar observations were also noticed when both boys and girls were analysed separately. Thus heart rate gradually decreases significantly as age, height and weight increases whereas both systolic and diastolic blood pressure increases as age, height and weight increases.

Determinants of Nutritional Condition: Discordance between Existing Understanding and Current Observation- A Study among the School Students of West Bengal
Original Research
Ensuring food security and nutrition in India is a great challenge considering continuous increase in population. Every adult individual should understand nutrition and the reason of malnutrition (under and over). For students, understanding of proper nutrition is a responsibility of their parents and teachers primarily. As food is the fuel of human living and correct food supplement is the key of growth and development, students should be guided accordingly to secure their future and it’s more important when few of them will dream to be successful in sports. In general participation in sports and games should be for all, every student needs to do regular exercise and thus understanding of nutrition is essential. Therefore, to identify the determinants of nutritional condition in a population, particularly in student community will have some significance in health education and can be useful also in sports science. This study is aimed to review the determinants of nutritional condition of the school students for example, parental education, occupation and number of family members on their child nourishment and to identify the social basis of growth and development in children and adolescent. The data were collected by Sarbashiksha Mission, Bardhaman; Government of West Bengal. To define underweight and obese category, we used the sex- and age-specific body mass index cutoffs as referred by Khadilkar et al (Indian Pediatrics). Parental socioeconomic determinants have not had any significant effect always on their child's nourishment. This study reveals that existing understanding about the parental education, occupation, number of family members and following impact on the nutrition of their children is not correct. Financially affluent people will have more fat, while poor people are suffering with under nutrition, higher education can influence proper growth and more members in a family will contribute a lesser amount of food distributed to each individual if the family is not well-off, these are the existing understanding with regard to nutrition. But there is a discordance between existing understanding and current observation. It is revealed in this study that we need to understand nutrition in a holistic approach rather than driven by conventional thinking. It is observed, parents, teacher must be aware that socioeconomic conditions are not the only determinants of nutritional condition, perhaps we need to have the proper health education, knowledge of correct food supplement can ensure proper nutrition of children and adolescent even in underprivileged section. We have to find out the probable reasons for such scenario, students are the future of this country, they should be guided by a correct understanding of nutrition, the role of exercise in daily life to ensure the proper nutrition.

Effect of Extensive Interval Training on Lactate Threshold Level
Original Research
Anaerobic threshold is defined as the physiological point during exercise at which muscular lactate production exceeds the rate of lactate oxidation and as a result, lactate shows up in the system and may be balanced or not, depending on the intensity of the exercise. The purposes of the study was to determine the anaerobic thresholds level of female athletes in different distance of running. Ten female athletes, range between 22 to 24 yrs. age, having some previous experiences of training were considered as the subjects of that study. The measured variables were resting heart rate, speed for different distance and the Blood lactate. The blood lactate were measured by colorimetric method with LA Kit (Bioassay). The subjects were gone for eight-weeks scheduled extensive interval training programme. The data were collected as pre and post training manner. Significant difference has found in increased blood lactate accumulation in different gradual increase of running distance such as 250mt., 300mt., 350mt. and 400mt., both in pre and post training phase separately. But considering the training effect, there were the reduction (250mt.-1.98%, 350mt.-.30%, 400mt.-1.39%) of blood lactate accumulation except in 300mt.( increased 2.66%) but that were not significant in same distance of running after the extensive interval training. The conclusion may be drawn that the reasonable Extensive Interval training programme have positive impact on improvement of anaerobic threshold level reducing the blood lactate accumulation.

Growth Development and Maturity in Children and Adolescent: Relation to Sports and Physical Activity
Original Research
Growth and physical maturation are dynamic processes encompassing a broad spectrum of cellular and somatic changes. The most obvious signs of physical growth are changes in overall body size. The children of the same age may differ in rate of physical growth. Ethnic variations in growth rate are also common. Thus growth norms (age-related averages for height and weight) must be applied cautiously. Physical growth, like other aspects of development, results from a complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors. Moreover, the endocrine glands also control the vast physical changes of childhood and adolescence. Although heredity remains important, environmental factors continue to affect genetic expression. Good nutrition, relative freedom from disease, and emotional well-being are essential to children’s healthy development. Changes in size, proportions, and muscle strength support an explosion of new gross-motor skills. Physical activity is needed for normal growth and development, and for young people to reach their potential in muscle and bone development. Further, the psychological, social, and physical development process project powerful influences on sport participation. Sports scientists, physicians and physical educators must be familiar with the normal patterns of growth and development of the child and adolescent. This allow finding out deviations during the pre-participation examination, guiding children into appropriate activities, aiding them in setting realistic goals concerning sports participation. It also provides guidance to the community and coaches in the design of safe and effective training programme.

A Study on Pulmonary Function of Adolescent Bengalee Trainee Bharatnatyam Dancers
Original Research
Dance, a type of art that generally refers to the rhythmic body movement, is performed in many different cultures. It provides an energetic, non-competitive form of exercise which has potential positive impacts on physical health and may enhance fitness level. On the other hand, pulmonary function test is a non invasive and simple technique used for the assessing lung function status. Practicing dancing as a physical activity may have some impact on lung function variables. In this backdrop a study was conducted to assess the effect of dancing exercise on the pulmonary function indices in terms of VC, FEV1, FEV1%, PEFR in the 31 adolescent Bengalee females receiving training in Bharatnatyam dancing. It has been found that individuals receiving dancing training have significant (P <0.05) favorable impact on pulmonary status compared to control group consisting of 39 individuals of same age and socio economic status.

Relevance and Incidence of Musculoskeletal Injuries in Indian Tennis Players; an Epidemiological Study
Original Research
Professional tennis sports involve powerful movements repeatedly subjecting the musculoskeletal system to heavy mechanical load, thereby increasing risk for most acute and overuse injuries. Despite many researches in sports injuries, however, none of them has dealt with prevalence, incidence, and pattern of tennis injuries among Indian tennis players. The aim of this study was to prospectively make a survey of prevalence and incidence of musculoskeletal injuries in Indian tennis players. A convenience sample of 350 professional tennis players from various national tennis sports complexes participated in this study. A sample size of 256 with a mean age of 22.67±9.34 years was compiled as per inclusion criteria. These included 173 males (24.23±10.20 years) and 83 females (19.41±6.09 years). An Unpaired t-test and ANOVA test were used to compare between injury incidences in different epidemiological study groups. Overall Injury Incidence was 2.18 / 1000 playing hours and Prevalence was 15.62 / 100 tennis players. Elbow was the most commonly injured joint, followed wrist, ankle, shoulder, knee, calf, thigh and foot in decreasing order of their occurrence. The gender difference was insignificant. Tennis players sustain more overuse injuries in upper limbs and more acute injuries in lower limbs. The backhand was the most injury aggravating strokes for elbow injuries, for wrist it was forehand stroke. This study helps to understand the prevalence and incidence of musculoskeletal injuries among Indian tennis players. The findings also reinforce the need for continuing scientific professional training and preventive fitness measures of the weak areas to reduce musculoskeletal injuries.
